Frequently Asked Questions

What is play therapy?

Play Therapy is a therapeutic technique for working with clients that utilizes many forms of play, such as drama, storytelling, miniatures, and role play. It can be used to diagnose, understand, communicate and resolve issues. It is often a more authentic and comfortable way for children to express their needs, and is a more effective way for communication to happen if verbal communication is limited. Using metaphor and symbolism, the client is able to depict their struggles and perspectives, and the therapist is able to co-create new ideas for personal growth. Play therapy builds a strong connection between the client and therapist, leading to faster breakthroughs than talk therapy alone.

How does virtual therapy work?

For many kids and families, virtual therapy is most convenient and just as effective. Using a HIPAA-compliant Zoom platform,  the client and therapist are able to meet through video conferencing. Some clients feel more comfortable meeting from their own space and often have more availability. Our virtual sessions look similar to meeting in person; we still utilize talk, play and art therapy. For therapy to be successful, it's important that kids and teens have a quiet and private place to meet for sessions, uninterrupted. Before starting to work together, I will share more recommendations for making virtual therapy successful. For consultations and parent sessions, virtual therapy often works best to allow parents to join from different locations at a time of day that works for everyone.

What are your specialties?

Our specialty is connecting with kids and helping them move through the difficulty they're experiencing in the way that works best for them. We work with children of all ages, including adolescents and young adults. At the same time, we support their families and caregivers and are sure to collaborate with them on treatment. We utilize play and art therapy as well as CBT, mindfulness, attachment-based therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and trauma-informed practice. We work with clients who have some of these challenges: anxiety, depression, behavior challenges, ADHD, tantrums and anger, trauma, self-esteem, and life transitions such as puberty, new siblings, grief & loss and divorce.

How do I pick the right therapist for me?

We suggest you trust your "feeling". Therapy is most successful when there is a strong rapport and personal connection between the client and therapist. Of course, every therapist has a unique personality and their own way of practicing. Rather than picking a therapist based soley on their modality or credentials, it is best to pick a therapist that you feel most comfortable with. We always recommend a free phone consultation before you begin. You may want to speak to several therapists before you decide who you'd like to work with.

How long does therapy usually take?

Therapy can last several months or years. There are no guaranteed results and the time it takes often depends on how long the client is able and willing to stay engaged in treatment. While some people may see big changes right away, most need to stick with it for longer to see things in their lives start to shift. Many clients leave therapy and come back at different times in their lives as personal circumstances change. Ending therapy is often a joint decision between the client and therapist, however, clients can choose to end therapy at any time.

Do you take insurance?

No, currently we are a private pay, out-of-network provider. Sessions cost $165 and can be paid following each session. Discuss with your insurance provider any out-of-network mental health coverage. If the cost of sessions is prohibitive, please contact us to discuss whether a sliding-scale spot is available.
